Geneva, Mar 12 (Prensa Latina) Cuba termed
positive the report by Jean Ziegler, UN Special
Rapporteur on The Right to Food, on the
situation in Cuba that he called an example of
cooperation and dialogue.
Cuban Ambassador Juan Antonio Fernandez said
Ziegler´s report after his 2007 visit to Cuba,
"once more shows that there are different ways
of doing things to promote human rights."
Fernandez added that "pressure and impositions
have never worked with a country willing to
defend its sovereignty and principles." He
namely extols the "political courage, power and
proven independence" in an official of the Human
Rights Council forced to elude pressures and
deal with fabricated obstacles against its
mandate.
The Cuban official thanked Ziegler for his
recommendation to the US government to lift the
illegal economic, commercial and financial
blockade which the Bush Administration has
braced at unthinkable levels.
The diplomat noted that in addition to providing
the Rapporteur full cooperation, Cuba voiced its
will to invite other Council officials.
He reminded that Cuba signed on Feb 28, 2008 at
the UN the International Covenant on Civil and
Political Rights and the International Covenant
on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
"We did it now, not before, because for
principles and Constitutional mandate, Cuba has
never nor will never act under pressure."
Fernandez said Cuba is preparing a report to the
Universal Periodic Review Mechanism, so it is
consulting every sector to draft a national
