DOHA. The Cuban community in Qatar will express
their solidarity with the five Cuban
professionals imprisoned in the U.S, at a
function in the Cuban Embassy premises here on
September 14. An exhibition on the life of those
imprisoned will also be organized at the embassy
from September 14 to October 8.
Fernando González, Antonio Guerrero, Gerardo
Hernández, Ramón Labañino y René González -the
Cuban Five, as they are internationally known–
are languishing in the US prison since September
12, 1998. Cuba organizes such exhibitions across
the world to garner international support for
their release.
The event will mark the International Day of
Solidarity with the “Cuban Five” to be observed
all over the world between September 12 and
October 8, Alejandro R. Fuentes Febles, the
third secretary at the Cuban embassy told the
Qatar Tribune.
“The five young professionals were arrested in
Miami. And this happened when they were, in
fact, fighting the terrorist groups targeting
Cuba,” said Febles. “The five men were put on a
manipulated trial in Miami, a completely hostile
city dominated by a mafia of the Cuban-origin.
No fair and impartial trial was possible there
in keeping with the US and international laws,”
a communiqué issued as a part of the campaign
stated.
A documentary, “The truth about the Cuban five”,
will be screened at the Cuban embassy on
September 14 before a gathering comprising
primarily Cubans, diplomats and the media,
Febles said.
Febles emphasized that ties between Qatar and
Cuba were strong. “Though the Cuban community in
Qatar is very small, we have strong economic and
political ties with this country. The Cuban
embassy has been functioning in Doha since
1994,” said Alejandro. The growing relations
between the two countries were reflected in the
visit of the Emir His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin
Khalifa al Thani to Cuba in September 2000 and
the visit of the Cuban leader Fidel Castro to
Qatar in May 2001.
Heir Apparent His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin
Hamad Al-Thani has also led a Qatari delegation
to Cuba for attending the 14th Non
Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Havana.
“Ours is a small country with big neighbors. We
have several common interests with Qatar,” said
Febles.
