Cuban petroleum firm’s delegation to visit Qatar.

Published: Saturday, 30 April, 2005, 11:55 AM Doha Time

HAVANA: Cuba is to send a technical team from its petroleum company to Qatar to get abreast with the Gulf state’s accomplishments in oil and gas industries, officials said yesterday.

The decision to send the team to Doha was taken during a meeting on Thursday between Qatar’s Second Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Industry HE Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah and senior Cuban officials.

Al-Attiyah discussed with Cuban Basic Industries Minister Yadira Garcia Vera issues dealing with oil and gas sectors in the two countries.

“During the meeting the two sides agreed that Cuba would send a technical delegation from Cuban Petroleum Company to Qatar to get abreast with Qatari accomplishments in the field of oil and gas industries,” an official said.

The Cuban minister welcomed al-Attiyah’s visit to Cuba and  their  “fruitful” talks on industrial co-operation and exchange of experience in industry and investments.

The Cuban minister said the exchange of visits came after the visit of HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani to Cuba and that of Cuban President Fidel Castro to Qatar.

Speaking to the Cuban press, al-Attiyah said his talks with the Cuban minister focused on co-operation between the two countries in oil and gas industries and on promoting bilateral relations in various fields.

Replying to a question on the current oil prices, al-Attiyah said Opec has always been working to find a balance between supply and demand in the oil market through providing the required supply with the aim of keeping prices at proper levels.

“The fluctuation of prices is not at the hands of Opec, but it is attributed to a number of factors including the spot market at the international bourses, and psychological factors which coincide with the negative political developments as well as natural and technical disasters.”

The period between 1986 and 1998 was a difficult and bitter one for oil producers when the prices went down to between $8 and $10 per barrel, he said.

Earlier, officials at the ministry of basic industries gave an account of the development of oil and gas industries in Cuba, terming it as modest compared with that of Qatar and other countries in the Middle East.

Al-Attiyah also met Cuban Vice President Jose Ramon Fernandez who underlined the development of relations between Qatar and Cuba.

At another meeting, al-Attiyah discussed economic issues of mutual interest with the Cuban minister of foreign investments and economic co-operation.
