12.09.07

The Cuban medical mission working in Guatemala was granted the "Father Manolo Maquieira" Human Rights Award for its work in the Central American nation. The ceremony was presided over by President Oscar Berger, Vice President Eduardo Stein, and the country’s president and vice president elect Alvaro Colom and Rafael Espada.

A representation of the more than 340-strong Cuban medical brigade attended the ceremony receiving the award "for their solidarity with the people of Guatemala, in favor of the right to life, good health and a better living standard."

Along with the Cuban physicians, the Survivors Foundation of Guatemala also recognized the Ceiba Group for their rehabilitation work with young people in marginal neighborhoods and in prisons, and journalist Marina Coronado, for her outstanding role in the struggle against impunity.  (Embacuba Qatar-Granma)
