The Cuban medical mission working in Guatemala
was granted the "Father Manolo Maquieira" Human
Rights Award for its work in the Central
American nation. The ceremony was presided over
by President Oscar Berger, Vice President
Eduardo Stein, and the country’s president and
vice president elect Alvaro Colom and Rafael
Espada.
A
representation of the more than 340-strong Cuban
medical brigade attended the ceremony receiving
the award "for their solidarity with the people
of Guatemala, in favor of the right to life,
good health and a better living standard."
Along with the Cuban physicians, the Survivors
Foundation of Guatemala also recognized the
Ceiba Group for their rehabilitation work with
young people in marginal neighborhoods and in
prisons, and journalist Marina Coronado, for her
outstanding role in the struggle against
